Advantages and Disadvantages of Same-Sex Marriages

Are you in favor of same-sex marriages, or are you against same-sex marriages?

Historically, same-sex marriage has been debated over and over.

In the U.S. alone, the subject has been met, even to this day, with strong opposition.

From June, 2016, same-sex marriages have been legal in all states in the U.S.

Elsewhere, and at the time of writing – mid 2019 – same-sex or gay marriages are legal and recognized in the following countries (or at least in various jurisdictions within the following countries):

Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Malta, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, the United States and Uruguay.

What are the pros of same-sex marriages – of gay marriages? In other words, what are the arguments in favor of same-sex marriage?

What about the cons or the arguments against same-sex marriage?

Let’s find out now.

Advantages of Same-Sex Marriages

1  People are people. Everyone should be afforded the exact-same access to the exact-same benefits regardless of being heterosexual or homosexual.

2  Marriage, in general, is a basic civil right. Shouldn’t marriage be a basic civil right for homosexuals as it is for everyone else?

3  Discrimination. Based on sexual orientation, no group of people should be singled out for discrimination against.

In the U.S. Constitution, the prohibition of same-sex marriages is in violation of the 5th and the 14th Amendments.

4  Correlation to lower rate of divorce. Where same-sex marriages are recognized as being legal, there’s a correlation with lower divorce rates.

Where same-sex marriage is banned, there’s a correlation to a higher rate of divorce.

Some argue that same-sex marriages offer more stability than heterosexual marriages.

5  Marriage is not only for procreation. If it were, if marriage was only afforded to those that wished to have children, then surely heterosexual couples that wish to get married but do not wish to have children should be prevented from marriage.

6  Religion. While some religious people argue that same-sex marriage is against the wishes of God, there are many churches and religious leaders that offer support to same-sex marriages.

What’s more, many say that same-sex marriages are completely consistent with scripture.

7  Good parenting. What’s to say that a couple in a same-sex marriage are not going to be as good parents as a couple in a heterosexual marriage?

Disadvantages of Same-Sex Marriages

1  Homosexuality is unnatural and immoral. Marriages that are same-sex are homosexual marriages. That means they are not natural marriages and that is immoral.

2  Marriage is about having children – procreation. As such, marriage should not be a right of same-sex couples given that they cannot procreate with one another.

3  Consequences for children. Because children need a female mom and a male dad, in a same-sex marriage with children, there are potential knock-on consequences.

4  Non-traditional marriages will soon be accepted. The legalization of same-sex marriages means that other marriages of a non-traditional fashion will also be legalized. For example, marriages that involve polygamy, incest, and bestiality.

5  Promotion of homosexual agenda. The legalization of same-sex marriages does little more than to promote and advance the homosexual agenda. The main target here is children.

6  Undermining of the institution of marriage. Same-sex marriages do little more than to undermine the institution of marriage. Traditionally, this institution involves the bonding of man and woman.

7  Assimilation of gay people into mainstream culture. Legalization of  same-sex marriages means that more gays will be assimilated into mainstream society. In turn, this can only be detrimental to communities worldwide.

8  Taxes in support of wrongdoing. Same-sex marriages will mean that tax dollars (or whatever currency) will be utilized to support issues that should never be given support.

9  Incompatible with religion. Because same-sex marriage violates the word of God, for many religions, same-sex marriages are completely incompatible.
